BIBLE STUDY - THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not the fruit of the Spirit, Galatians 5:22 or the baptism with the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are God's spiritual tools to be used by His children here on earth, as the Holy Spirit decides. The Bible clearly states that the Holy Spirit distributes to each one of us individually as He wills. We read all about the gifts of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:1 - 11, Paul start by saying; "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant". Verse 4, "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit". Verse 7, "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all". The modern church is lacking in many of the gifts and many Christians are helpless as newborn babes without the gifts. True believers are partakers of the divine nature and power of God to represent Him in the world. All children of God should manifest a supernatural nature in life through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and through pure faith in the name of Jesus and His atonement. God has provided the baptism with the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit for such manifestation of divine life in His children.

THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT THERE ARE NINE GIFTS: 1 Corinthians 12:1 - 11.

1. The word of wisdom through the Spirit, verse 8. Example; Luke 2:40 - 52; John 2:24.

2. The word of knowledge through the Spirit, verse 8. Example; John 6:64; John 13:1.

3. Faith by the Spirit, verse 9. Example; Matt. 8:23 - 27; Mark 9:17 - 29; Heb. 12:1 - 2.

4. Healing by the Spirit, verse 9. Example; Matt. 4:23; Matt. 8:16 - 17; Acts 10:38.

5. Working of miracles by the Spirit, verse 10. Example; Matt. 8:26; John 2:1 - 12.

6. Prophecy by the Spirit, verse 10. Example; Matt. 5:7; Matt. 16;21; Matt. 24:1 - 25.

7. Discerning of spirits, by the Spirit, verse 10. Example; Matt. 9:4; Mark 1:34.

8. Tongues by the Spirit, verse 10. Example; 1 Corinthians 14:1 - 5.

9. Interpretation of tongues by the Spirit, verse 10. Example; 1 Corinthians 14:1 - 25.

WE CAN DIVIDE THE GIFTS INTO 3 CATEGORIES: 1 Corinthians 12:1 - 11.

A. GIFTS OF REVELATION or mind gifts:

1. The word of wisdom through the Spirit, verse 8.

Word of wisdom is to be able to speak the right decisions according to the will of God.

2. The word of knowledge through the Spirit, verse 8.

Word of knowledge is to be able to speak the right know - how or insight into the will of God.

3. Discerning of spirits, verse 10.

Discerning of spirits is to be able to detect and discern or recognize different spirits.

B. GIFTS OF INSPIRATION or vocal gifts:

1. Prophecy by the Spirit, verse 10.

Prophecy is the utterance in a known tongue about the will of God.

2. Tongues by the Spirit, verse 10.

Tongues are the utterance in an unknown tongue about the will of God.

3. Interpretation of tongues by the Spirit, verse 10.

Interpretation of tongues is the utterance in a known tongue of what was uttered in an unknown tongue.

C. GIFTS OF POWER or working gifts:

1. Faith by the Spirit, verse 9.

Faith is confidence and trust in God for the miraculous manifestation of divine power according to the promises and word of God.

2. Healing by the Spirit, verse 9.

This is God's power through our life to heal diseases, to make the body whole and healthy by what Jesus Christ paid for on the cross.

3. Working of miracles by the Spirit, verse 10.

This is God's power to intervene in the ordinary course of nature and natural laws that govern the material universe.

DO WE GET THE GIFTS AUTOMATICALLY WHEN WE ARE BAPTIZED WITH THE SPIRIT?

The answer to this is, no. We must ask God for it, 1 Corinthians 12:30, “Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way”. Why do people speak in tongues if they get baptized with the Holy Spirit. There are two types of tongues. The first is a sign when someone gets baptized with the Holy Spirit, Acts 2:8 - 13; Acts 19:1 - 6. The second is one of the gifts of the Spirit as can be seen in 1 Corinthians 14:1 - 25. As far as one or all of the nine gifts, we must have a desire to have these and ask God for them.

HOW CAN WE GET THESE GIFTS? There is a saying; "If God is your partner make your plans big". Gifts of the Spirit should be desired and asked for in prayer just like other things that we need from God. Mark 11:24, "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them". John 15:7, "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you". John 14:12, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father". If a true believer desire one or all of the Gifts he/she is free to ask and he/she will receive according to his/her faith. Do not limit your faith concerning anything that you want from God, if you do, you will receive a limited answer.

CAN WE CHOOSE WHICH GIFTS WE WANT? The answer to this is definitely, yes. 1 Corinthians 12:31, "But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way". 1 Corinthians 14:1, "Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy". 1 Corinthians 14:12, "Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel". If you have true faith in God you will get what you ask for.

HOW CAN WE KNOW WHAT GIFT/S WE HAVE RECEIVED? The proof of having certain gifts is the ability to exercise them. Power or the anointing to speak in tongues, interpret tongues, prophesy, discern spirits, or whatever divine ability we receive is sufficient proof of such gifts. Healings will prove that we have the gift of healing. The gift/s themselves will prove that we have that gift. Do not allow Satan to rob you from any blessings, we have to practice these gifts. The important thing is that our life must be right in God's eyes, and we must have faith for Him to perform these gifts. I remember that there was a pastor a few years ago that challenged others, that God will raise the dead if he prays for them on national television. Nothing happened, the problem was that the gift of miracles did not operate through him. God is still able to raise the dead.

The Holy Spirit is a person given as a gift to the Church to ensure the continuous ministry of the resurrected Christ in the world. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are available to every spirit - filled believer who desires, welcomes and expects the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. God wants to accomplish His work supernaturally throughout the face of the earth. He wants to take ordinary people and work supernaturally through them to destroy the works of darkness and establish the kingdom of God in power and glory.

The spiritual tools of God are the gifts of the Spirit. These gifts belongs to the Holy Spirit, He gives to those that He sees fit. If you do not have the Holy Spirit none of these gifts will be able to works thru you. Read 1 Corinthians 1:5 - 7, ‘That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ’. For those that does not want to accept this read, 1 Corinthians 14:38, ‘But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant’.

Hebrews 2:4, ‘God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?’. Romans 11:29, ‘For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance’.

IN CONCLUSION:

THE NINE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT. 1 Corinthians 12:1 - 11.

1. The word of wisdom through the Spirit, verse 8.

2. The word of knowledge through the Spirit, verse 8.

3. Faith by the Spirit, verse 9.

4. Healing by the Spirit, verse 9.

5. Working of miracles by the Spirit, verse 10.

6. Prophecy by the Spirit, verse 10.

7. Discerning of spirits, by the Spirit, verse 10.

8. Tongues by the Spirit, verse 10.

9. Interpretation of tongues by the Spirit, verse 10.

WE CAN DIVIDE THE GIFTS INTO 3 CATEGORIES: 1 Corinthians 12:1 - 11.

A. GIFTS OF REVELATION or mind gifts:

1. The word of wisdom through the Spirit, verse 8.

The gift of a word of wisdom is a supernatural revelation by the Spirit of God concerning the divine purposes in the mind and will of God - concerning the future. The gift of a word of wisdom is a divine communication from God, given by the Holy Spirit through the believer. With this gift God gives forth a small segment or portion of information from His vast wisdom. The gift of a word of wisdom has to do with that which is of the future. God is revealing the future. Every prophet in the Bible possessed this gift, and prophets who live today also possess it. The gift of a word of wisdom involves speaking the hidden things - things we would not normally or naturally know. The gift of a word of wisdom, like the gift of a word of knowledge, can be given by an audible voice. It can also be given by a vision or it can be given through a dream. It can also come through the vocal gift of prophecy or sometimes through tongues and interpretation.

2. The word of knowledge through the Spirit, verse 8.

The gift of a word of knowledge is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts in the mind of God concerning things past or present. First of all, note the fact that this gift is called `a word of knowledge’ not the `gift of knowledge’. There is no such thing as the `gift of knowledge’. God is the source of all knowledge - He knows everything but He does not reveal everything to man. He gives man just a word or part of what He knows. He imparts just that which He wants us to know i.e. the word of knowledge is a part or portion of the great Omniscience of God. The word of knowledge is related to fact - it reveals those things which are or were, things past or present. This must be something which the person could not know naturally. The gift of a word of knowledge can come through tongues and interpretation, or through the gift of prophecy.

3. Discerning of spirits, verse 10.

The discerning of spirits gives insight into the spiritual world. The gift of the discerning of spirits has no relationship to that which is natural. It has nothing to do with the mind.

Note: there is no such thing as the `gift of discernment’. Everything within the realm of knowledge - facts, events, purpose, motive, origin, destiny, human, divine or satanic, natural or supernatural, past, present or future - comes within the range of the revelation gifts. The discerning of spirits gives insight into the spiritual world. This gift is neither the `discerning of devils’, nor is it the `discerning of evil spirits’. This gift has to do with spirits, both good and bad. It is supernatural insight into the spiritual realm. Manifestations in the world in which we live come from different sources. Satan is also a supernatural being. Through the gift of the discerning of spirits, we can know the spirit behind the operation. It is important, however, to note that even without the gift of the discerning of spirits in our lives, if we know the Word of God and are walking in the spirit, we will have an inner witness that will lead us, see Romans 8:14. We need to distinguish the difference. Some things are revealed to us by the inner witness and some things are revealed by the gift of the discerning of spirits.

B. GIFTS OF INSPIRATION or vocal gifts:

This group of gifts, unlike the Power gifts and the Revelation gifts, are not for the world. These gifts are strictly for the benefit of the Church. They have a threefold function: edification, exhortation and comfort; 1 Corinthians 14:4 - 5.

1. Prophecy by the Spirit, verse 10.

Prophecy is the supernatural utterance in a known language - speaking the mind of Christ by the inspiration of the Spirit, not foretelling the future, but the gift of prophecy does include forth - telling. To foretell is to tell the future. To forth - tell is to speak for another; to be a spokesperson for God.

2. Tongues by the Spirit, verse 10.

The gift of diverse kinds of tongues, which the Apostle Paul is speaking about in 1 Corinthians 12, is not the prayer language of tongues that comes with the infilling of the Holy Spirit as in Acts 2:4. The gift of diverse kinds of tongues is a gift used for public ministry and should be distinguished from tongues as a devotional gift.

3. Interpretation of tongues by the Spirit, verse 10.

It is not translation of tongues, it is the interpretation of tongues. If one person gives forth a tongue and two different people interpret the tongue, each interpretation may be different, however, the essence of the message will be similar. The purpose of this gift is to make the gift of tongues understandable to the hearers so that the Church, as well as the possessor of the gift, may know what has been said and may be edified by it.

C. GIFTS OF POWER or working gifts:

1. Faith by the Spirit, verse 9.

Those who possess the gift of faith believe God in such a way that He honors their faith as His own and miraculously brings it to pass. Faith is the greatest of the three gifts of power. It is a gift of the Spirit to the believer that he might receive miracles. The difference between the gift of faith and the gift of the working of miracles is that the gift of faith receives a miracle and the gift of the working of miracles works a miracle. The gift of faith supernaturally achieves what is impossible through human ability. We see this gift in operation when God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, performs supernatural exploits that cannot be humanly explained.

2. Healing by the Spirit, verse 9.

The purpose of the gifts of healings is to deliver the sick and to destroy the works of the devil in the human body. The gifts of healings are for the supernatural healing of disease without natural means of any source. These gifts have nothing to do with medical science or human learning. Supernatural healing does not come by diagnosis or by prescribing treatment, but by the laying on of hands, anointing with oil or sometimes by just speaking the word.

3. Working of miracles by the Spirit, verse 10.

A miracle is a supernatural intervention in the ordinary course of nature; a temporary suspension of the accustomed natural order through the Spirit of God. The gift of the working of miracles is God working through a person to do something that could not normally be done. It is used to display God's power and magnificence. Remember that the gift of faith receives a miracle and the gift of the working of miracles work a miracle. The gift of faith is God working independently of us, on our behalf. In the gift of the working of miracles, God is entrusting us with strength, with an energy that we do not normally have. It is the power of the Holy Spirit surging through us causing us to do or be something that is not normal or natural to our behaviour.

Summary:

We are all human beings. Our lifespan is 70 - 80 years if we are blessed. Life can pass - by within a few winks of an eye. Time has no stop, it goes on without stopping. Before you know your lifespan is over. You only have one chance here on earth.

We come from different backgrounds and cultures. Some of us are still clinging to traditional believes and cultures. Sometimes it is hard to reject things that our forefathers believed in. How can we know the truth? The answer lies in the Bible. We have to study and search the Scriptures. Our pride can prevent us from seeing and accepting the truth.

The average human being is to lazy to show interest in his or her future. Satan is the author and maker of all shortfalls that we have. He is a liar and a thief. The blood of Jesus has washed us who truly believe in Him from all unrighteousness and He has overcome Satan on the cross of Calvary . Sitting there will bring us nowhere we have to go out and do something about our future.

God the Father has made it easier for all His children here on earth. He has given us His Holy Spirit to teach us in all righteousness. He has given us His Holy Spirit to lead and to guide us. Then we have the gifts of the Holy Spirit to make it easier for us to live for Him. No one will ever have an excuse to say; “I did not know”.
