BIBLE STUDY - LOVE
When we think about love, the general idea is that we think about the feeling between a man and a woman. The subject of love is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the Bible. Young men and woman are very ignorant on this important matter. We must understand how our feelings inside of us work, or how God wants us to see love. What do you see or understand about love?
There are more than 900 Scripture verses in the Bible referring to love.
We have one word for ‘love’ in English, in Afrikaans ‘liefde’, in Zulu ‘utando’, in French ‘jeteme’, etc.
In Greek there are four words to the one word for ‘love’:
1. "Agapé". God’s love. Unconditional love. John 3:16.
2. "Phileó". Brotherly love or friendship love. Romans 12:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:9.
3. "Strogé". Family love. I love my mother and father. Matthew 10:37.
4. "Erós". Sexual love. 1 Corinthians 7:1 - 40.
The above four points will allow us to place the verses on love in the Bible that we read in the right category.
There are many facts about love in the Bible. The greatest we find in John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life".
a. For God - The greatest of all. We forget that God is also a being with emotions like us.
b. So loved - The greatest devotion. Love is a feeling that we have towards others.
c. The world - The greatest number of people. God knows about each one of us. The Bible tells us that He evennows how many hair we have on our heads.
d. That He gave - The greatest act. Love is something that we
share and show towards
e. His only begotten Son - The greatest gift. God has many
sons and daughters but
e. His only begotten Son - The greatest gift. God has many sons and daughters butJesus Christ is His only Son conceived by the Holy Spirit.
f. That whoever believes in Him - The greatest condition. We come far short in believing sometimes. The Bible tells us that Satan also believes in God, what about the atheists, do they think that they have more brains than Satan.
g. Should not perish - The greatest mercy. God does not want anyone to be lost for eternity.
h. But have everlasting life - The greatest result. There is life after death it is our very own decisionwhere we are going to spend it.
Having God’s love will put us in the "Agapé" group.
"Phileó" love must be found in "Agapé", "Strogé" and "Erós".
"Stogé" love is towards my own flesh and blood family, "Agapé" and "Phileó" must be found in "Strogé".
"Erós" is sexual love, if I am married I must have "Agapé" and "Phileó" and "Erós" towards my wife/husband. "Strogé" can not be included in my "Erós" love, because my wife/husband is not my own flesh and blood.
Emotional attraction is if a person feels attracted to another person. This feeling starts in our soul. See my Bible study on God and man.
A person’s feelings towards the opposite sex will start in his/her soul the moment there is physical contact, this feeling is the foundation of "Erós". To prevent this feeling from taking over there must be no physical contact. Read 1 Corinthians 7:1 - 9.
Young woman tend to see a sexual relationship with a man as a form of security. Young men tend to see a sexual relationship with a woman as a form of victory.
There is a big difference between the feeling of ‘in love’ or ‘love’.
‘In love’ is a feeling seated in the soul, ‘love’ is a feeling from the spirit or the person.
The chapter of love that has a lot to explain is found in 1 Corinthians 13.
To be continued.
